Rising emergency caesarean births in England

A new BBC analysis has highlighted a significant rise in emergency caesarean births in England, with around one in four babies now delivered by emergency caesarean.

Elly Charity Trustee Professor Shakila Thangaratinam, Professor of Women’s Health at the University of Liverpool and Consultant Obstetrician, was quoted in the article:

“An increase in emergency caesarean sections poses concern if these are not accompanied by a corresponding decrease in stillbirths, newborn and maternal complications.”

This also reflects Professor Thangaratinam’s wider international research into caesarean section patterns, outcomes and safety. Her work has highlighted the importance of understanding not only how often caesareans are performed, but why they are performed, for whom, and whether they lead to better outcomes for women and babies.
